Can a player use Soul Exchange without having a monster present on his side of the field?
Answer:
You DO NOT need to have a monster on your side of the field to activate "Soul Exchange." You do not need to have a monster on your side of the field to use its effect.
For example, you can activate "Soul Exchange" while you have no monsters on your side of the field, and afterwards you can Tribute the targeted monster to Tribute Summon a monster from your hand.
