The impact of removing Continuous Spell/Trap Cards Empty
PostSubject: The impact of removing Continuous Spell/Trap Cards   The impact of removing Continuous Spell/Trap Cards EmptyFri Apr 13, 2007 2:42 pm

Stumbling, Card Trader, and Skull Lair have become popular choices in today's
metagame. Several times a Mobius targets a Stumbling when summoned.
Its optional trigger effect ends up resolving first.
And many players attempt to negate the effects of face up continuous cards
by chaining Mystical Space Typhoon to their effects' activations.
Judges in turn have been ruling the outcome of these chains both ways allowing
the continuous card's effect to resolve in some cases and not in others.
I have read through the FAQs and came up with the following conclusions.

"But, if you chain against a Continuous or Equip Spell Card, or a
Continuous Trap Card, with "Mystical Space Typhoon" (or "Dust Tornado"),
the Continuous/Equip Card is no longer active because it is destroyed,
and the effect does not resolve and disappears."

This is still rather vague with the word "active" as it seems as if it only
applies to continuous cards with continuous effects.

"If "Sacred Phoenix of Nephthys" is Special Summoned by its effect during the
Standby Phase, and "Card of Safe Return" is on the field, "Sacred Phoenix
of Nephthys" is Step 1 of the chain and "Card of Safe Return" is Step 2,
so "Card of Safe Return" resolves first and you draw a card before "Card of
Safe Return" is destroyed."

I assume this ruling implies that if the order were reversed you would not get
to draw a card.

"Shuffling 1 card into your Deck is a cost.
Using this effect starts a Chain."

This leads me to believe that you can chain Mystical Space Typhoon to the
activation of Card Trader's effect in the Standby Phase and force the opponent
to lose an additional card in the process.

Could you clarify the actual mechanics involving the destruction of continuous
cards?

Thanks for your help, time, and dedication.

Answer:

When a Continuous Spell or Trap Card is removed from the field, its effects
disappear. It doesn't matter if the Continuous Spell or Trap Card was using a
Continuous Effect, Trigger-Effect or Ignition-Like Effect at the time it was
removed from the field.

Refering back to your example with "Card Trader", if "Card Trader's" effect is
activated and a card like "Mystical Space Typhoon" is chained, the "Mystical
Space Typhoon" will resolve first and destroy the "Card Trader", removing it
from the field. When "Card Trader's" effect tries to resolve it will disappear
because the Continuous Spell Card is no longer on the field.

Now, some Continuous Trap Cards have effects you can chain multiple times,
like "Ultimate Offering" or "Skull Lair", as long as you can keep paying the
activation cost. With these cards you can often chain to the effect intending to
destroy them and at least get something before they are wiped out.

For example:
You have a face-up "Ultimate Offering" and you decide to activate its effect
during your Main Phase 1. Your opponent chains "Dust Tornado" to destroy it.
Assuming you have at least another 501 Life Points, you can chain "Ultimate
Offering" again.

Ultimate Offering --> Dust Tornado --> Ultimate Offering

"Ultimate Offering" will resolve and you will Normal Summon or Set 1 monster
from your hand. Next, "Dust Tornado" resolves and destroys the "Ultimate Offering".
Now "Ultimate Offering" tries to resolve again, but its effect disappears
because it is no longer on the field.

Example 2:
You have 3 "Heart of the Underdog" face-up on your side of the field. When you
draw Normal Monster Card during your Draw Phase, you can activate all 3 copies
of "Heart of the Underdog" and their effects form a Chain.

HotU 1 --> HotU 2 --> HotU 3

If your opponent chains "Dust Tornado", they will be able to destroy 1 of them
before it can resolve. By doing so, you will only draw 2 cards instead of 3.
(You would have drawn 3, were it not for one of them being removed from the field)
