Introducing Konami’s newest tournament series – Konami Presents: The Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series!

These events are the newest in Premier Level tournament play, and will replace the previous SHONEN JUMP Championship tournament series. KDE has made several tweaks and improvements to the old tournament structure, including the tournament format, prizing and Public Events.

There is no invite required to participate at a Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series tournament - it is an open event.

As there is a high expected attendance for these events, the tournament format has been modified to make the play experience more enjoyable for Duelists and staff alike. Swiss Rounds will be spread over the course of both days for very large tournaments, and we have increased the Top Cut, which gives more Duelists a chance to make it to the playoffs.

Prizes for this event have also been increased – new, exciting electronics have been added to the higher places, the Prize Cards are now offered in an Ultra Rare and Super Rare version, and the extended Top Cut can offer prizes down to Top 32.

The number and variety of Public Events has also been increased, to provide options for a wider variety of Duelists. Even if you aren’t interested in competing in the main event, there will probably be many Public Events that will appeal to you.

And the most exciting news of all for Duelists in Latin America and Europe – this tournament series will extend to your territories as well. You’ll want to watch for Organized Play announcements in your respective areas, as the YCS tournament series expands!

BASIC INFORMATION

Q: What happens at a Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series event?

These are big, exciting 2-day events that take place from Saturday to Sunday. Duelists from all over will attend these events to compete for exclusive prizes; earn invites to their National Championship; and spend the weekend Dueling, trading, and hanging out with hundreds of other Yu-Gi-Oh! fans.

In addition to the main Championship Series tournament there are numerous Public Events, including tournaments specifically for Duelists aged 12 and under, and 2010 Regional Qualifier tournaments. Competitive or casual, there is something for everyone to do at a Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series weekend event.

The Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series tournament is an open event. No invite is required in order to participate.

Q: Are there any pack prizes apart from the five packs that everyone gets?

9th -16th place will receive 24 booster packs of the current set. This is the only product prize, outside of the 5 participation packs, that will be awarded.

Q: What is the format for the Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series ?

Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series tournaments are Constructed events, which means each Duelist must bring his or her own Deck in order to compete. Decks must be constructed according to the latest Advanced Format guidelines. (See here for more information: http://www.yugioh-card.com/en/limited/#limited_adv).

Please remember that the Advanced Format changed as of March 1st. You will need to make sure your Deck matches the current format.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series tournaments will be run using Swiss Format, which means all Duelists will play a set number of rounds determined by the number of Duelists enrolled in the event. Duelists are not eliminated during the event, and can play through all Swiss rounds.

Saturday, May 15th – Day 1:
Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series Duelists will play 8-9 rounds of Swiss. If there are any rounds remaining in the tournament, the top-ranked 128 Duelists at the end of these 8-9 rounds will return on Day 2 to play the remaining rounds.

Sunday, April 25th—Day 2:
If needed, the Top 128 ranked Duelists will return to play out the remaining rounds of Swiss, based on the original enrollment of the tournament as described below.
Players will continue on Day 2 with their previous records and Decks – these rounds will not be treated as a new tournament.

When all remaining Swiss rounds have been played out, a Top Cut will be selected based on final standings.

The number of Duelists determine the total number of rounds:
129 - 256 Duelists – 8 rounds (All Swiss Rounds Played Day 1, Top 16 Day 2)
257 - 512 Duelists – 9 rounds (All Swiss Rounds Played Day 1, Top 16 Day 2)
513 - 1024 Duelists – 10 rounds (8 Rounds of Swiss Day 1, Last 2 Rounds of Swiss & Top 32 Day 2)
1025 - 2048 Duelists – 11 rounds (9 Rounds of Swiss Day 1, Last 2 Rounds of Swiss & Top 32 Day 2)
If there are enough Duelists for two days of Swiss Rounds (more than 513 players), then only the Top 128 Duelists will be eligible to continue Swiss Rounds on Day 2.
Additional Swiss rounds will begin at 9:00 AM on Sunday, with the Top Cut to follow. If no additional Swiss rounds are required on Sunday, the Top Cut itself will begin at 9:00 AM.
If there are 512 or fewer Duelists, the tournament will cut to Top 16 after all rounds of Swiss are completed. If the Top Cut is 16 players, prizes will be awarded down to 16th place.
If there are 513 or more Duelists, the tournament will cut to Top 32 after all rounds of Swiss are completed. If the Top Cut is 32 players, prizes will be awarded down to 32nd place.
Duelists should take this schedule and format into account when planning their travel for this event.

Q: Will the Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series have the Bounty Feature?

Yes! We will be including the Bounty Feature forthe Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series.

Here’s how it will work:
At the start of the tournament, a certain number of Duelists will be selected and tagged with Konami lanyards. Each lanyard will bear a number, from 1 to 10.

Each of these Bounty Duelists will begin the tournament with a stack of booster packs (4 packs per round) allotted to him or her. So, for a 10-round tournament, the total Bounty on each Duelist would be 40 booster packs.

At the start of each round, 4 packs will be removed from each Bounty Duelist’s total, and placed in their Bounty Pile. If the Bounty Duelist wins, he or she receives 2 of the packs from the Bounty Pile, leaving the rest in the pile. If the Bounty Duelist loses, the opponent claims all of the packs in the Bounty Pile.

At the end of each round, both the Bounty Duelist and the opponent must come up to the main stage so the winner can collect the packs.

The longer a Bounty Duelist goes undefeated, the more packs you can win if you beat him or her.
If the Bounty Duelist goes undefeated, he or she will keep all the packs in his or her Bounty.
Bounty Duelists are not eliminated by a loss. Once you’ve been tagged, you are a Bounty Duelist for as long as you are participating in the event. The lanyard is yours to keep.

Bounty Duelists are chosen for a variety of reasons – including past performances at events, running an innovative or exciting deck, or maybe for wearing a really eye-catching hat. If you are chosen, you don’t have to participate if you would rather not join in.

Q: Will there be Duel Terminals at the Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series – Washington, DC?

Yes, there will be two Duel Terminals at the Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series – Washington, DC! The Duel Terminals will be set up during normal tournament hours in the event hall. The Duel Terminal machines accept quarters and single dollar bills – please bring an adequate amount of change if you would like to use the Duel Terminals – each Duel Terminal costs $1.00 per play.

PREPARING FOR THE TOURNAMENT

Duelists who wish to enter a Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series must meet the following criteria:

Have a Deck that meets the current Advanced Format criteria (The Advanced Format changed on March 1st, be certain your Deck is up to date).
Have a COSSY ID number (obtainable at the event) and be a Duelist in good standing.
Duelists who have been suspended from Organized Play by KDE are not considered to be in good standing, and may not register for, compete in, or be present at sanctioned events.
Suspended persons may not enter the venue of a Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series tournament. If a suspended person is discovered at the venue, they may be charged with offenses including but not limited to trespassing, as well as an extension of their suspension.
The “venue” includes all areas within the immediate area of the tournament hall, or the building in which the tournament is held.
Q: What will I need to bring to a Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series tournament?

You should bring a tournament-legal Deck as described above, along with any tournament supplies you will need; such as paper and pen to track Life Points, dice or counters if you are using cards which require them, extra sleeves to replace any that become damaged, and so forth. If you have a COSSY ID number, you should bring your number and barcode. You should bring a form of personal identification with a picture. You’ll also need the entry fee for the tournament, as well as money for your incidentals (food, drinks, Public Events, etc.)

Duelists are responsible for looking after their own belongings at the event.

Q: What will I need to bring in order to register for the tournament?

Be prepared to present your COSSY ID number along with your name at registration, and be prepared to show a proper form of personal identification if it is requested. Acceptable forms of personal identification include current-year School ID cards, driver’s licenses, passports, or other government - issued identification documents.

If you are under the age of 16, you can bring your birth certificate as proof of ID.

Duelists who register or attempt to register under another Duelist’s name or COSSY ID number will be disqualified from the event, and risk suspension from Organized Play events.

You will also need to fill out a Deck List registration sheet. You will fill this out by listing all of the cards included in the Deck you want to use. You can get a Deck List form at the registration area.
This Deck List will be collected from you during the Player Meeting right before Round 1 of the tournament, so you do not have to have it ready the moment that you register.

Q: Can I pre-register for the Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series?

Yes! You can and you should - you can pre-register at the venue, from 3:00 PM -8:30 PM on Friday, May 14th. Once you are pre-registered, you are officially entered into the tournament and will not need to register again on Saturday. Save yourself a few hours of sleep on Saturday morning, and take advantage of pre-registration! You can pick up a copy of the Deck List form when you pre-register.

Q: If I’ve never been to a Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series tournament, what should I expect?

Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series are among the biggest of all Yu-Gi-Oh! tournaments, and bring in Duelists of all ages and skill levels. Many Duelists travel great distances to attend Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series, so you expect to meet hundreds of fellow Yu-Gi-Oh! fans from all over.

When you compete in a Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series tournament, you’ll be held to high standards of play and sportsmanship. You should know how the cards in your Deck work, and should take great care to prepare your Deck, sleeves, and Deck List.

Duelists are responsible for paying attention to information from judges and/or tournament staff in order to understand what is going on. If players have questions about the event either beforehand or while they are there, they should check with the Event Manager.

Duelists should read over the KDE Penalty Guidelines carefully before the event. You may find these Guidelines by clicking here:

http://www.yugioh-card.com/en/gameplay/penalty_guide/KDE_Penalty_Feb2010.pdf

Q: I will be bringing my children to the Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series. Is there anything I should know?

We will have a Parents’ Lounge available, where parents can relax while their children are occupied in the tournament. This area is open only to parents and their children.

You are not required to stay on site, but we strongly recommend that you do, especially if your children are young or this is their first event. Please know that the tournament staff cannot be responsible for looking after your children, or their possessions.

Always make sure your child has a way to contact you, and is provided with any necessities such as food, drink, or extra money if you do not wish to remain in the tournament area.

When your child is preparing for the event, encourage him or her to leave any bulky or expensive possessions at home. Electronics and large collections of cards are hard to keep track of during a big tournament – your child will have a much easier day without having to worry about these kinds of items.

Trading cards is a big attraction at large tournaments, but if you are concerned about your child trading away valuable cards, talk to him or her before the event and set some guidelines. You can always have your child check with you before making a trade.

Special Events for Duelists Aged 12 and Under:

There will be a special Dragon Duel tournament on Saturday and Sunday, open only to Duelists aged 12 and under. These events are a lot of fun, and offer some great prizes. Your child will need to bring his or her own Deck in order to compete in these events. (Please see the Public Event descriptions below to learn more about Dragon Duel tournaments).

Q: What is the closest airport to the Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series – Washington, DC?

Q: What’s the best way to get to the tournament from the airport?

Q: I want to judge at a Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series, instead of competing as a player – how can I volunteer?

If you’re interested in judging at a Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series , please email KDE’s Judge Manager at us-judgesupport@konami.com. We are always on the lookout for judges– please provide your full name, contact information including email and phone number, and a description of your previous judging experience. You can also request to be added to the KDE Judge Roster, which will enable you to receive additional information and updates about the Judge Program. YCS Event Managers are not responsible for organizing the judge staff, so you will need to contact KDE directly if you want to judge.

Potential judges do not currently need to hold Konami certification in order to judge, however we recommend all potential judges pass the online Rulings Comprehension Level 1 test, in order to better prepare themselves for these prestigious events.

You can find information about the test, and a link to take it, here:
http://www.yugioh-card.com/en/judges/index.html

Q: I want to vend at a Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series, whom should I contact?

Vending space is available free of charge at Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series venues, but is only available to Official Tournament Stores in good standing. Vendors must meet certain requirements and agree to abide by set guidelines. Interested vendors should email us-opsupport@konami.com with the header “Request to Vend at [name and location of event]”. Vendors will be required to complete and submit an application for each event at which they wish to vend. Keep in mind that KDE handles the applications for vending at SHONEN JUMP Championships rather than the Event Manager.

Cash transactions with anyone other than an approved vendor at an approved location are prohibited at Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series events. Attendees who conduct cash transactions, such as selling of cards or product, to anyone other than an approved vendor at a Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series event risk penalties including disqualification and expulsion from the venue.

Q: Whom should I contact if I have questions about the Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series – Washington, DC?

If you have more questions about the event, you should contact Event Manager Laurel Chiat by email at laurel@dreamwizards.com, or by phone at 301-881-3530 (the Dreamwizards store).

Q: Will there be additional copies of the YCS Prize Cards being given out in a Public Event playoff?

There will actually be two sets of the YCS Prize Cards given out for the Public Event Playoff.

Duelists can earn entry points for the Public Event Playoff by participating in Public Events over the course of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series weekend. On Sunday at approximately 4:30 PM, the Public Event competitors will be chosen, as follows:

Playoff 1: Four names will be drawn at random from all entry points. These four competitors will then play two rounds of single elimination to determine a winner, who will receive a Super Rare set of the new YCS Prize Cards.

Playoff 2: The four Duelists who have accumulated the highest number of Public Event points will play two rounds of single elimination to determine a winner, who will receive a Super Rare set of the new YCS Prize Cards. In case of a points total tie, the selection will be made by random drawing from the tied competitors.
Both of these playoffs will occur simultaneously. One set of the prize cards will be awarded to the winner from each playoff, so a total of two sets prize cards will be given out.

Q: What are the point values for the Side Events?

Side Event values are as follows:

Win-A-Mat: 1 Point
Dragon Duel: 3 Points
Regional Qualifier Flights: 2 Points
ATTACK OF THE GIANT CARD!!: 3 Points
Pegasus League: Deck Challenge: 2 Points
Yu-Gi-Oh! Tin Challenge: 3 Points

Points are awarded for entry into each event, and extra points are awarded to the winner of each event.

Duelists must be present for the start of the first round of each event for which they register, in order to receive the entry points.

Remember, you cannot register in more than one event at a time. If you register for an event while you are still enrolled in a previous event, you will forfeit all Side Event points for all events in which you are simultaneously registered.

The winner of each event will receive double the point value. For example, a Duelist who enters ATTACK OF THE GIANT CARD!! and wins the event, will receive 6 points for the event instead of 3.
